Instructions Following the Canalith Procedure

Activity Limitations for the Next 24-48 Hours

"Keep Your Chin Parallel to the Ground"

In other words, do not tilt your head up or down and do not bend over at the waist. Pretend there is a book balanced on top of your head. Use of the cervical collar will remind you not to tip your chin downward. However, side-to-side turns are okay.

Do not go to appointments that require you to lie down or tilt your head, such as, the hairdresser, barber, dentist, or chiropractor. Eye drops should be avoided due to compromised head position during insertion.

When brushing your teeth use a cup for rinsing out your mouth to avoid bending over. Care should be taken when shaving or washing your hair to avoid tilting your head downward or upward.

Keep your back straight without bending at the waist when sitting down and getting up. Avoid extraneous activities and housework should be delegated to others. Call on family and friends for assistance when needed.

Sleeping During the Next 24-48 Hours:

"Do Not Lie Flat in Bed"

Sleep with your head in a vertical position as much as possible. Sleeping in a recliner is best. The recliner can be slightly tilted back; however, no further than you could recline in an airplane seat (approximately 30-45 degrees). Your head should face straight forward and pillows may be propped on each side to prevent rolling over. If you do not have a recliner you may lie in bed. When reclining in bed, prop yourself up with plenty of pillows to keep your head upright and place something at the bottom of your feet to prevent slipping down during the night.

For the next week refrain from activities that involve excessive head movement. Cervical collar may be worn as a reminder not to move head up or down.
