Background:
Dr. John T. McElveen Jr., a graduate of Davidson College, received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His residency training in Ear Nose & Throat Surgery was performed at Stanford University Medical Center. His subspecialty otology/neurotology training was done at the renowned House Ear Clinic/Institute. Following his fellowship, he practiced otology as an associate of the prestigious House Ear Clinic. In 1987, Dr. John T. McElveen Jr. left the House Group to head the Otology/Neurotology program at Duke University Medical Center for six years before founding the Carolina Ear & Hearing Clinic in 1993. He remains a consultant professor in the Otolaryngology Division at Duke.
Clinical Specialties (Adult and Pediatric Patients):
- Conductive hearing loss - tympanic membrane perforations, cholesteatomas, ossicular chain reconstruction, and laser stapes surgery.
- Sensorineural hearing loss - implantable hearing aids, cochlear implants and auditory brainstem implants.
- Balance disorders - Meniere's disease.
- Neurotologic/skull base surgery - acoustic neuromas, menigniomas, glomus tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, facial nerve dysfunction (hemifacial spasm and facial palsy).
