Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural substance that protects and cleans the ear canal. In most people, the ears clean themselves. For some, however, wax can build up and cause muffled hearing, discomfort, or problems with hearing aids.
Signs of ear wax buildup
- A plugged or full feeling in the ear.
- Muffled or reduced hearing.
- Ringing, itching, or mild ear discomfort.
- Hearing aids that whistle or sound weak.
What to avoid
Cotton swabs, bobby pins, and ear candles can push wax deeper, injure the ear canal, or damage the eardrum. It is best not to place anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.
Safe home care
Mineral oil, baby oil or Debrox (carbamide peroxide) OTC ear drops are safe to soften wax at home for most patients. These can be purchased on amazon or at your local pharmacy. Do not use these drops if you have ear pain, drainage, a perforated eardrum, a history of ear surgery, or ear tubes without first speaking with a ear specialist.
