Hearing Aids
A few minutes of care each day keeps your hearing aids sounding their best and helps them last for years. Here is how to clean, store and troubleshoot your devices — and when to bring them to us.
Wipe your hearing aids each evening with a dry, soft cloth or tissue to remove earwax, moisture and skin oils. Use the brush and wax pick from your care kit to clear the microphone ports and sound outlet. Never rinse hearing aids with water or use alcohol, solvents or cleaning wipes not made for hearing devices.
Replace the wax guard whenever sound becomes weak or distorted — for most wearers that is every two to six weeks. Silicone domes should be changed about every three months, or sooner if they become stiff, discolored or torn. We stock guards and domes and can show you how to change them.
Open the battery door overnight so moisture can escape and the battery lasts longer. Store spare batteries at room temperature and away from coins or keys. For rechargeable models, charge fully every night and keep the charger contacts clean and dry.
Remove your hearing aids before showering, swimming, using hairspray or sitting in a sauna. Store them in a dry, cool place inside their case, and use a drying kit or electronic dehumidifier if you perspire heavily or live through humid summers.
If a hearing aid is silent, check that it is turned on, the battery is fresh or charged, the volume is up and the wax guard is clear. Whistling feedback usually means the device is not seated fully or the dome is the wrong size. Crackling often points to moisture or a clogged microphone port.
