Cochlear Implants

For people with severe-to-profound hearing loss who get limited benefit from hearing aids, a cochlear implant can restore access to sound and make conversation easier again.

What Is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is a medical device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear and sends sound signals directly to the hearing nerve. It has two parts: an internal implant placed during surgery, and an external sound processor worn behind the ear.

Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, a cochlear implant turns sound into electrical signals the brain learns to recognize as speech and everyday sounds.

Our surgeons and audiologists work together through every step, from evaluation to lifelong care.

Who May Be a Candidate?

  • Children and adults with substantial hearing loss
  • Limited benefit from properly fitted hearing aids
  • Difficulty understanding speech, even with hearing aids
  • Single-sided deafness

Medicare and most insurance plans cover cochlear implants for people who meet candidacy requirements.

The Cochlear Implant Process

1. Candidacy Evaluation

Our audiologists perform detailed hearing and speech-understanding tests with your hearing aids to see whether a cochlear implant may help more than hearing aids alone.

2. Medical Consultation & Imaging

Our physicians review your medical history, examine your ears, and order imaging (CT and/or MRI) to plan surgery and confirm your inner ear anatomy.

3. Choosing Your Device

We work with all major cochlear implant manufacturers and help you choose the technology that best fits your hearing needs, lifestyle, and goals.

4. Outpatient Surgery

Surgery usually takes about two hours and most patients go home the same day. The internal implant is placed under the skin behind the ear.

5. Activation

About two to four weeks after surgery, your audiologist activates the external sound processor and creates your first program.

6. Programming & Ongoing Care

Regular programming visits fine-tune your device as your brain learns to use the new sound. Most people notice steady improvement over the first year.
